Guest Blog – Monash University – FYP brings together best-in-class technologies to create a functioning Digital Twin

Guest Post by Shikhar Gupta, final-year student in the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University, Victoria, Australia. Shikhar was a full-time intern at LEAP Australia over the summer of 2017/18, then completed his Final Year Project using LEAP & PTC software during 2018. The result of Shikhar’s work was presented last week at Monash University Spark Night where all ECSE final-year students showcase their final-year projects. Setting out on this project, our aim was to create a working digital twin prototype that could be considered to represent a smart connected product operating out in the field. In doing so, I was able to demonstrate the process of connecting a product to the cloud, performing physics-based simulations to predict product behaviour under...

PTC’s IoT & PLM technology Leading the Pack – awarded “Leader” status across successive independent reports

Here at LEAP Australia, we already know how good the IoT and PLM tools from PTC are - Thingworx and Windchill - after all, we work with them every day! But how do they stack up when reviewed by completely independent third-party researchers such as Gartner, Forrester and ABI Research?   Well we’ve put together a compilation of the most recent independent assessments of IoT platforms and PLM that have been completed in the last 12 months - in each case, the criteria was wide ranging including objective measures such as: - capabilities of vendor’s current technology - installed customer base using their technology worldwide - completeness of roadmap / vision, and - ability to execute. In each report, PTC’s IoT and PLM technology emerged...

Industry problems confirmed – Countdown begins for RMIT IoT/AR Hackathon

Don’t miss LEAP’s session at MaD2018: Manufacturing and Design Conference in New Zealand

MaD2018: A Collaborative Future for NZ Manufacturing and Design (#MaD2018) – May 21- 22, 2018 The Second National Conference for Innovation in Manufacturing and Design Join us in Auckland, NZ, next week for MaD2018 & learn about exciting, new manufacturing and design research and be inspired by examples of positive collaborations between industry and researchers. What is it? The MaD Network is a cross-disciplinary community of New Zealand researchers in manufacturing and design that works in close collaboration with industry to envision and shape New Zealand’s future manufacturing economy. (#MaD2018) What can I see from LEAP? In addition to an interactive booth with IoT and AR from real-world industry applications on display, Allan Thompson, PTC Technical Manager from LEAP, will also be presenting on Tuesday May…

What is Industry 4.0 and what does it mean for us as engineers?

Industry 4.0 Solutions at LEAP Australia
Initially devised as part of a German government-led strategy to promote digitalisation in manufacturing, the term Industrie 4.0 (aka the fourth industrial revolution) has arisen in recognition of the significant value that can be realised in transforming manufacturing from traditional techniques to a fully connected and digitally managed process, often known as cyber-physical systems. This strategy has now been embraced globally, though you’ll notice it is known by other names around the world: for example, Smart Manufacturing (in the United States) and Made in China 2025. In most cases, commercial companies are excited about the potential for Industry 4.0 technologies to help them remain competitive in a changing manufacturing space, which is particularly relevant for companies operating in high-cost economies (such as here in Australia &...

Guest Blog by RMIT: “How to Train the Next Generation Workforce?”

In this guest post, Mark Raphael, Industry Engagement Manager at RMIT University, provides his insights from the AMTIL 2017 National Conference – “Manufacturing’s Future in a Digital Age”. On Tuesday 14 November I took part in a panel session at the AMTIL 2017 National Conference to respond to the question: “How to Train the Next Generation Workforce?”. Understanding the characteristics of the Next Generation Workforce is of course crucial in answering this question.   The Next Generation Workforce will be made up of post-millennials or “Linksters”; those born after 2002. The Linkster Generation (so called because they are linked into technology from day they are born) have grown up with social media, smart phones, apps and pervasive wi-fi. Video games have introduced the Linksters to…

Augmented Reality (AR) draws attention at MMS 2017 launch night

[Editorial Note: from June 2018, the AR app referred to in this blog is now known on all app stores as Vuforia View]: Thanks to Monash Motorsport (MMS) for the invitation to their 2017 Launch last week. The team at LEAP is proud to be a long-standing partner of the MMS team, and we were excited to work with them this year to deliver a new Augmented Reality (AR) experience to help showcase their M17-C and M17-E cars on launch night, and also use AR to highlight components on the car from key sponsors. On launch night, we were able to showcase these AR experiences using the Microsoft Hololens (see video below), plus provide a take-away AR experience on a flyer for all attendees to...

As a key member of the Australian Technology Network of universities, RMIT University has identified a recent surge in demand for graduates with skills in Industry 4.0, including the Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) and augmented reality (AR) for the enterprise. Combined with their longstanding use of simulation technology from ANSYS, RMIT University is implementing the use of PTC technology across their...

LiveWorx 17: Physical Digital Convergence – The New Frontier of Innovation

LiveWorx 2017 Keynote Presentation

The LiveWorx 17 Technology Conference is underway this week in Boston, USA and it kicked off with a bang as PTC President and CEO, Jim Heppelman, gave the opening keynote presentation in which he outlined and demonstrated PTC’s vision for ‘true’ Product Lifecycle Management in the IoT age. Jim provided a brief history of PTC’s journey from the originator of parametric CAD in the 1980’s to becoming the leading solutions provider today for what he describes as the ‘inevitable convergence of the physical and digital worlds’.  Building on the base of PTC’s traditional technologies in CAD, PLM and ALM, Jim explains how the advent of rapid manufacturing and IoT connectivity has led to the realisation of the model-based Digital Twin. A Digital Twin is a…
